Greece rises as a top travel choice for Americans and Australians in 2025, with more direct flights and improved global tourism rankings driving increased demand.

Greece continues to be a highly sought-after travel destination among global tourists, particularly in the United States and Australia. According to the latest study by the Institute of the Greek Tourism Confederation (INSETE), Greece ranks 10th in travel preferences for Australians planning to travel abroad in the next 12 months, 13th among Americans, 32nd among Chinese travelers, and 36th among Indians.

This ranking places Greece among the top Mediterranean destinations for travelers from these key markets. However, the study also highlights a mixed trend in Greece’s position across different countries compared to 2023.

Despite the slight drop in China and India, Greece’s position in the US market remains competitive. The difference between Greece and countries ranked just ahead is only about one percentage point, indicating that Greece still has room to climb with strategic marketing and increased accessibility.

How Greece Compares to Mediterranean Competitors

Among its Mediterranean competitors—Spain, Italy, France, Portugal, Croatia, and Turkey—Greece maintains a strong position in key global travel markets:

In the US travel market, Italy currently sits in fourth place, France ranks seventh, Spain is ninth, and Greece follows at 13th place. The small ranking gap suggests that Greece can further improve its standing with increased promotional efforts, better travel infrastructure, and direct flight expansions.

Massive Expansion in US-Greece Direct Flights

One of the biggest drivers of growth in US tourism to Greece is the expansion of direct flights between the two countries. Noting the increasing demand from American travelers, major US airlines—as well as international carriers—have drastically increased their flight schedules to Greece in 2025.

This year marks a historic milestone as Greece hosts the highest number of direct air connections with the US in its history.

This nearly twofold increase in flights over the past five years has directly contributed to a surge in American tourist arrivals and tourism revenue in Greece.

The Economic Impact of Increased Tourism from the US

The rising number of American tourists in Greece is leading to higher travel spending, increased hotel occupancy rates, and a significant boost to the Greek economy.

Greece’s Long-Term Strategy: Strengthening Its Global Tourism Brand

To maintain and enhance its position among top global destinations, Greece is investing in tourism infrastructure, digital marketing, and sustainable travel initiatives.

Key Strategies for Growth:

  1. Boosting Air Connectivity – Expanding direct flights from key global markets, particularly the US, Australia, India, and China.
  2. Marketing Greece as a Year-Round Destination – Promoting spring, fall, and winter tourism, beyond the traditional summer peak.
  3. Enhancing Digital Marketing and Outreach – Utilizing social media campaigns, influencer collaborations, and targeted promotions in key markets.
  4. Developing Sustainable Tourism – Encouraging eco-friendly travel, cultural tourism, and local community engagement to preserve Greece’s natural beauty and heritage.
  5. Strengthening Regional Tourism – Promoting lesser-known Greek islands and mainland destinations to distribute tourist traffic more evenly.

Greece’s Bright Future in Global Tourism

As Greece continues to rise in global tourism rankings, strategic investments in connectivity, marketing, and infrastructure will be essential in maintaining this momentum. The historic increase in direct US-Greece flights in 2025 is a game-changer, making Greece more accessible than ever for American travelers.

With strong demand from the US and Australia, Greece is well-positioned to compete with Mediterranean rivals and attract more long-haul travelers. Although challenges remain in the Chinese and Indian markets, Greece’s focus on expanding its global tourism appeal will ensure steady growth in the years to come.
